Linguist Michael Montgomery has written that the North Carolina tourism division used to issue a booklet called A Dictionary of the Queen’s English, which claimed that the English of Queen Elizabeth I could be found in pockets of the state. A recent study conducted by Quentin D. Atkinson, a biologist at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, suggests two very important findings: language originated only once, and the specific place of origin may be southwestern Africa. Until recently, a sensible linguist would likely respond to such questions with a shrug and a sigh. However, once the Magna Carta was written in 1215 and the Serfs were freed, the language grew and expanded to the nobility. This makes English the third-most spoken language in the world behind Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.
This theory, favored by Plato and Pythagoras, maintains that speech arose in response to the essential qualities of objects in the environment. Debates continued back and forth in America and in the Philippines as to whether the official language of the country should be English or one of the other native languages.
It’s useful to know how words would have been pronounced centuries ago because it changes our appreciation of the texts. Because British English pronunciations have changed so much since the era of Queen Elizabeth I, we’ve rather lost touch with what Early Modern English would have sounded like at the time. Turning this around – and claiming kinship with a Shakespearean way of speaking – was a way of bringing status and apparent classiness to a marginalised part of the country. The language changed a lot during this phase. The English language, and indeed most European languages, traces it original roots back to a Neolithic (late Stone Age) people known as the Indo-Europeans or Proto-Indo-Europeans, who lived in Eastern Europe and Central Asia from some time after 5000 BC (different hypotheses suggest various different dates anywhere between the 7th and the 3rd millennium BC). As a result, the theory goes, some Americans speak English with an accent more akin to Shakespeare’s than to modern-day Brits. Over the centuries, many theories have been put forward—and just about all of them have been challenged, discounted, and often ridiculed. While it is widely understood that our ability to communicate through speech sets us apart from other animals, language experts, historians and scientists can only hypothesize how, where and when it all began. The original sounds people made were supposedly in harmony with the world around them.
English is a living language.
This is a personal project not a scholarly work, and I have not provided unimpeachable references to original sources for every point I make, although I have given specific references and credits for all images used. Montgomery traced the idea back to an educator-clergyman who, around the turn of the 19th Century, spread the idea that mountain language was a remnant of a much older tradition. Between 1.5 and 2 billion people have at least a slight competence in the language.
“Mountain speech has more archaisms than other types of American English, but that’s about it,” Montgomery writes. But linguist David Shores has noted that these claims are exaggerated, and that the island’s isolation, rather than any freezing of Elizabethan speech patterns, is responsible for its linguistic quirks. Vocabulary differences can be observed even between two cities in the same state.
Many words in Old English were taken from Latin as it was still considered the formal language of the times (500-1200AD).
Native English speakers now would have great difficulty understanding Old English.
Apart from some rare instances of sound symbolism, there is no persuasive evidence, in any language, of an innate connection between sound and meaning. Some alterations included three letters being removed and the adoption of the letter V, the 'th' diagraph was used much more frequently and many instances of the letter U were converted to O.
Fifty-two nations claim English as their official language while fifty-three more have a high rate of competency with the language. ‘Love’ and ‘prove’ is just one pair of examples; in the 1600s, the latter would have sounded more like the former. How English Became English: A Short History of a Global Language. He’s also transcribed Christopher Marlowe’s poem Hero and Leander into OP. “It is a delightful and attractive myth that Shakespeare’s language got fossilised” in parts of the US, he says.
