This week’s Rally Australia has been cancelled due to serious bushfires affecting New South Wales.
Organisers say cancelling the event is in the best interests of everyone in the rally and the wider community. Organisers announced the cancellation on Tuesday afternoon after consultation with the State Government, the FIA, emergency services and the local community.
It was part of the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship in 1988 and the WRC from 1989 to 2006. Rally Australia has been cancelled following concerns about the rapidly spreading fires closing in on the event’s Coffs Harbour base. Kennards Hire Rally Australia (14 – 17 November) has been cancelled after serious bushfires affected much of northern New South Wales close to the event’s Coffs Harbour base.

The organisers of the final round of this year’s World Rally Championship put together a revised and shortened route on Monday, but the decision to cancel was taken on Tuesday morning. Event Chairman Andrew Papadopoulos said the cancellation was the only course available, considering the safety of the more than 1000 people involved as officials, competitors and in support roles. Rally Australia event chairman Andrew Papadopoulos added: "Our thoughts are with the NSW community, especially the people who have lost loved ones, livelihoods and homes as a result of the fires in northern NSW, and we thank the rally community for your support and understanding.".

The State is experiencing its worst ever bushfire conditions, which have resulted in the declaration of a State of Emergency, a statewide total fire ban and conditions in some regions classified as “catastrophic”.
