I’m in the market for a new sharpener and am trying to decide b/w the gauntlet and the sharpmaker. Whereas, with freehand sharpening you have to be very careful about maintaining the angle of your blade, the Sharpmaker takes out the guesswork. Any steel Spyderco uses will handle lower angles much lower than 40 degrees inclusive. I have had a sharpmaker for a long time, and have used the KO worksharp ( I have seen a demo but not used the regular work sharp, not so impressed with the regular) The extra $ spent on the KO is a much better deal then the regular worksharp, due to variable speed, 5 grits vs 3, wider belts, adjustable angle vs fixed 40. It can sharpen just about any knife with ease, including even serrated knives. Before Spyderco ever made knives, we manufactured the tools to keep them sharp. Don´t have the Gauntlet, but quite a bit experience with the Sharpmaker. i might be wrong, but the gauntlet gave me vibes that it was meant for kitchen knives rather than harder use folders and such.
